Region of Origin: Africa

The modern Chinese Crested is believed to have originated in Africa and was called the African Hairless Terrier. Born in the same litter, there are two distinct varieties to this fine-boned, elegant and graceful dog: The Hairless and Powderpuff. The Hairless only has hair on the head, tail and feet, whilst the Powderpuff is completely covered with hair.

This breed is alert, playful and entertaining. Being very intelligent, this dog does well in obedience type sports. Consistency is a must, however this breed can be relatively sensitive and should have a gentle trainer.

Maintenance of the Hairless varietys skin is considered similar to maintaining human skin and it can therefore be prone to acne, dryness, and sunburn. Despite the limited amount of hair it still requires a certain amount of grooming.

The eyes are almond-shaped, set wide apart. Dark-colored dogs have dark-colored eyes, and lighter-colored dogs may have lighter-colored eyes. The ears are uncropped large and erect, placed so that the base of the ear is level with the outside corner of the eye.

Height. 11-13 in. Some may be slightly larger.

Weight. 10-13 lb

Lifespan 12- 14 years

The Chinese Crested is not considered a high energy breed however, daily exercise is needed. They make great pets for apartment or city living, but being very versatile, also enjoy open spaces, country parks and long hikes.

Special consideration - Allergies and autoimmune diseases have been observed in the breed.
